Origin: Croatia, a relative of Mondeuse Blanche,
Main wine-growing areas:
Single Varietal in Condrieu & Chateau Grillet in Northern Rhone, Barossa Valley in South Australia (a specialty of Yalumba).
In Southern Rhone it is often blended with Marsanne & Roussane.
In Northern Rhone 6-10% is often co-fermented in the red wines of Cote-Rotie, a style that is replicated in many parts of the New World as Shiraz/Viognier.
Characteristics: Intense aromatics with low-moderate acidity, high alcohol, weighty, sometimes viscous. Not noted for its longevity, perfume doesn’t last.
Food-matching:
Roast Chicken or Pork, rich shellfish dishes with creamy sauce, spicy flavours of SE Asian cuisine, especially if influenced with ginger and/or saffron, local goat’s cheese from Condrieu.
